Free food, lively music, a Hawaiian talent show, beautiful weather, and a nice breeze. What could be better?
On May 25, soldiers, spouses, and their families gathered in the Hoekstra Pavilion behind the USO center to enjoy a celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander culture. There were varieties of food from Filipino foods and deserts to Hawaiian delicacies.
It felt like being back home in America and the Philippines at the same time! Riley also got to try some new Filipino foods like Spanish rolls and puto (rice cake).
The military can be a hard life sometimes, but I am grateful for these events that recognizes the different cultures within the Army. I was thankful for the sense of home and familiarity I felt amidst a culture and atmosphere I was still trying to get accustomed to. I look forward to attending more events in the future. I thank the Army and the hardworking volunteers and performers. I like that the military does their best to accommodate its soldier and their families. It isn't perfect but they do so much to support us, and make the PCS transition as smooth as possible.
